Punctuation کسے کہتے ہیں؟
جب ہم کچھ لکھتے ہیں تو جملوں کے درمیان ، شروع اور آخر میں کچھ علامات استعمال کرتے ہیں جن سے ہمیں, جو اظہار کرنا چاہتے ہیں، کو پڑہنے والوں تک صحیح مفہوم پہںچانے میں مدد ملتی ہے۔ آئیے نیچے دیا ہوا ایک چھوٹا سا پیراگراف دیکھتے ہیں۔

Punctuation کی کونسی علامات ہیں؟
لکھی جانے والی دیگر علامات punctuation نہیں ہیں
لکھنے میں اور علامات بھی استعمال ہوتی ہیں، جیسے mathematical signs (+-=%<>/) اور financial , monetary, scientific, internet signs وغیرہ۔ اوپر table میں دی گئی علامات کے علاوہ دیگر علامات punctuation کے زمرے میں نہیں آتی ہیں۔

Full Stop یا Period (.) کا استعمال
اس کے مندرجہ ذیل استعمال ہیں:-
1. Sentence کے اختتام پر لگایا جاتا ہے، جیسے:
.I am reading a book
.He is going to Lahore
2. Abbreviation کے بعد لگایا جاتا ہے، جیسے:
Mr. for Mister
Mrs. for Mistress
Cantt. for Cantonment
Jr. for Junior
a.m. for ante meridiem
p.m. for post meridiem
M.A. for Master of Arts
B.Sc. for Bachelor of Science
Question Mark (?)کا استعمال
یہ نشان سوالیہ sentences کے آخر میں لگایا جا تا ہے، جیسے:-
?Who was the founder of Pakistan
?When will you come back
?What is the time
?Are you with us
Exclamation Point (!) کا استعمال
حیرت، غصے، دکھ اور دیگر جزباتی اظہار کے الفاظ کے بعد Exclamation Point کا نشان لگایا جاتاہے، جیسے:
.No! It is not true
.What! Say it again
!What a fine day
.Horray! We have won
!Run away!, Oh!, Vow

Comma (,) کا استعمال
1. ایک جیسے الفاظ کی گروپ کے items کو علیحدہ کرنے کے لیے comma کا استعمال کیا جا تا ہے۔ آخری item سے پہلے and یا or لگایا جاتا ہے اور اس and یا or سے پہلے comma لگانا ہو تو لگا لیں مگر ضروری نہیں ہے:-
She bought some bananas, apples, grapes, and mangoes.
I must visit my Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Quetta offices.
2. ایسے phrases اور clauses جو مزید معلومات دیتے ہیں مگر sentence کے بنیادی معنی تبدیل نہیں کرتے، کے بعد comma لگاۓ جا تے ہیں:-
Most dresses on sale are, in her opinion, of poor quality.
3. Direct Speech میں reporting clause کے بعد comma لگایا جاتا ہے:-
.” He said to me, "I am going to France next week
4. مخاطب کرنے والے الفاظ کو باقی جملے سے علیحدہ کرنے کے لیے comma لگایا جاتا ہے، جیسے:۔
.Ahmed, Don’t do it again
.I will call you back, Baqar
5. Yes یا No سے شروع ہونے والے جملوں میں Yes یا No کے بعد:-
.Yes, she is coming today
.No, I don’t have any money right now
6. Sentences کے آخر میں آنے والے question tags سے پہلے comma لگتا ہے، جیسے:۔
?The shoes are beautiful, aren’t they
?You will play today, won’t you
7. Long sentences کو پڑہنے والے کی آسانی کے لیے ، چھوٹے ٹکڑوں میں تقسیم کرنے کے لیے:-
When Ahmed had tried every possible way to reach early, and was still unable, he decided to seek help from his father.
8.مخاطب کرنے والے الفاظ کو باقی جملے سے علیحدہ کرنے کے لیے comma لگایا جاتا ہے، جیسے:۔
.Hello, Can you hear me
.Hi, my name is Khursheed
9. Comma کو compound sentence میں contrasting اور comparing ststements کو علیحدہ کرنے کے لیے لگایا جاتا ہے:-
The movie was not interesting, just boring.
The more you hurry, the less you will be able to accomplish.

Semicolon (;) کا استعمال
Semicolon ایک comma سے زیادہ اور full stop سے کم pause کا اظہار کرتا ہے۔ اس کا استعمال بہت ہی کم ہوتا ہے۔ اسکے بجاۓ comma یا full stop کو استعمال کر لیا جا تا ہے۔
1. اسے دو independent clauses کو بغیر کسی conjunction کے جوڑنے کے لیئے استعمال کیا جا سکتا ہے اگر وہ related ہوں ، جیسے:۔
Waheed was hurt; thank God it was not a big accident.
Baqar was late; there was a traffic jam.
There is more to come; read it, and go on.
2. اگر کسی series کی لسٹ میں items کی تعداد زیادہ ہو تو comma کے بجاۓ semicolon سے انہیں علیحدہ کیا جاتا ہے:-
My favorite pastimes are cooking and watching TV; especially cooking recipes; reading newspapers and books, and meeting my friends.

Colon (:) کا استعمال
اگر کسی جملے میں لسٹ اور اس کے آئٹمز ہوں تو لسٹ کے آئٹمزسے پہلے colon لگایا جاتا ہے۔ پہلے ایک مکمل جملہ ہونا چاہیے۔جملے دیکھیں:۔
One can visit beautiful places in Swat Valley: Malam Jabba, Kaghan, Mahodand, and Ooshoo.
He was planning to study four subjects: mathematics, philosophy, sociology, and economics.
Colon کو independent clauses کے درمیان لگایا جاتا ہے اگر بعد والی clause پہلے clause کے بارے میں بتا رہی ہو:-
.I didn’t have time to get changed: I was already late
کسی چیز کو اہمیت دینے کے لیے بھی colon استعمال کیا جاتا ہے:-
There was one thing she loved more than any other: her cat.
بعض اوقات لمبی quotation کے تعارف کے لیے colon استعمال کیا جاتا ہے:-
My father once told me about an incident in his childhood: "I was only 8 years when …….”

Hyphen (-) کا استعمال
Hyphen اور Dash بہت ملتے جلتے ہیں۔ Hyphen سائز میں چھوٹی ہوتی ہے جبکہ dash اسکا ڈبل ہوتی ہے۔ Hyphen کے درج ذیل استعمال ہیں۔
Compound Word بنانے کے لیے الفاظ کے درمیان بغیر کسی space کےلگائی جاتی ہے، جیسے:-
part–time, back–to–back, up–to–date, best–loved, non-members, Commander–in–Chief, father–in–law, X–Ray, T–shirt,
Fractions اور ایسے Numbers جو 21 اور 99 کے درمیان ہوں، میں hyphen لگائی جاتی ہے:۔
Fractions: one–fifth, one–third, three–fourth,
Numbers: twenty–one, thirty–nine, ninety–eight,
Prefixes کے ساتھ:-
well–known, self–educated, short–sighted, old–fashioned, middle–aged, good–looking
Hyphen ہر جگہ استعمال نہیں ہو سکتے ہیں، adverb-participle combinations کےساتھ hyphen استعمال نہ کریں، جیسے:
well-behaved (incorrect)
well behaved (correct)
کہاں hyphen لگتا ہے اور کہاں نہیں، یہ چیک کرنے کے لیے ڈکشنری دیکھیں۔ ایسے الفاظ بھی ہوتے ہیں جن میں نہ hyphen لگتا ہے، نہ space دی جاتی ہے بلکہ جوڑ کے لکھ جاتا ہے۔ ایسے کچھ الفاظ نیچے درج ہیں؛-

Dash (ـــ)کا استعمال
Dash کا استعمال parenthesis, comma اور colon کی جگہ کیا جا سکتا ہے۔ اسکا استعمال لچکدار ہے۔ اسکے دونوں جانب space دی جاتی ہے۔ اسے وقفہ دینے یا اضافی معلومات الگ دکھانے کے لیے استعمال کیا جا تا ہے:-
My cousins – Ali, Ahmed, and Hafeez – are on a tour to Punjab.
The lunch box contained – a banana, an apple, two pieces of bread, and fried chicken.
We stopped work at night – to have some rest – and resumed in the morning.
کسی چیز پر زور دینے کے لیے:-
She gave him her answer — No!
Brackets [ ] کا استعمال
الفاظ کو مزید واضح کرنےکے لیے brackets کا استعمال کیا جاتا ہے:-
He [Mr. Ahmed] was the last person seen at the house.
She drove 60 [miles per hour] on the highway to town.
technical explanations اور mathematical equations میں brackets استعمال ہوتے ہیں۔

Braces { } کا استعمال
Braces کے ذریعے کسی text کی دو تین لائنوں کو ایک یونٹ ظاہر کرنے کے لیے یکجا اور محدود کیا جاتا ہے. Writing میں braces کا استعمال نہ ہونے کے برابر ہے۔ البتہ mathematical expressions میں اس کا استعمال عام ہے۔
Parenthesis ( ) کا استعمال
1. Parenthesis کے اندر کسی چیز کے بارے میں مزید معلومات دی جا سکتی ہیں۔ اکثر یہ ضروری معلومات نہیں ہوتیں، انہیں چھوڑا بھی جا سکتا ہے. Parentheses کو معنی تبدیل کیے بغیر comma سے بدلا جا سکتا ہے :-
Waheed (the boy from the school) helped me with my homework.
Basit and Raheela (who were actually half-brother and sister) both have brown hair.
2. بسا اوقات parentheses کے درمیان دیا جانے والا text مکمل sentence ہوتا ہے جو بنیادی sentence سے علیحدہ ہوتا ہے۔ Parentheses کے درمیان والا text اگر ہٹا دیا جاۓ تو مطلب پھر بھی واضح ہوتا ہے:-
The children won their game. (It was exciting!)
Razia (the girl that lives next to me) invited me to her birthday party next week.
3. اگر کسی مضمون میں کوئی phrase بار بار دہرایا جا رہا ہو تو پہلی دفعہ مکمل phrase لکھنے کے بعد parenthesis کے درمیان اس phrase کی abbreviation لکھ دی جاتی ہے اور پھر جب جب اس phrase کا استعمال کرنا ہے تو phrase کی جگہ اسکی abbreviation لکھ دی جاتی ہے۔ اس طرح phrase کی repetition سے بچا جا سکتا ہے۔ جیسے،

Apostrophe (') کا استعمال
Apostrophe کے مندرجہ ذیل تین استعمال ہیں۔
1. کچھ الفاظ بولنے اور لکھنے میں مختصر کر دیے جاتے ہیں اگرچہ یہ اختصار بہت معمولی ہوتا ہے مگر اس کا استعمال عام ہے۔ الفاظ کے کچھ حروف کم کر کے ان کی جگہ apostrophe کی علامت ‘ لگائی جاتی ہے، جیسے:-
I‘ve (I have)
wasn‘t (was not)
don‘t (do not)
isn‘t (is not)
aren‘t (are not)
can‘t (can not)
.I‘ve seen that movie several times
.She wasn‘t the only one who knew the answer
.”It is – It’s: “I can’t believe it’s snowing again
.”Let’s: “Let’s start saving more money each month
.He would – He’d: “He’d like to visit Swat Valley
?” Who is – Who’s: “Who’s there
.”She is – She’s: “She’s always on time
You are – You’re: “You’re going to have a lot of fun today”.
.”I am – I’m: “I’m planning to visit the seaside someday
2. Possession یعنی ملکیت ظاہر کرنے کے لیے apostrophe کی علامت s سے پہلےمندرجہ ذیل طریقے سے لگائی جاتی ہے:-
Razia‘s dog bit the neighbor.
Ahmed‘s car was damaged in the accident.
3. Words کے حروف اور digits کے plurals بنانے کے لیے apostrophe کا استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔
There is one 2, two 3‘s , one 4 and two 8’s in 238843.
There is 1 m, 4 i’s, 4 s’s and 2 p’s in Mississippi.
Quotation Marks (") کا استعمال
Inverted commas کو pair کی صورت میں کسی phrase, word ، clause یا sentence کے دونوں طرف لگایا جاتا ہے۔ ان کے درج ذیل استعمال ہیں:-
1. کسی کا قول یا مشہور کہاوت بیان کرنے کے لیے اسے quotation marks کے درمیان لکھا جاتا ہے:-
"Honesty is the best policy"
"Rome was not built in a day"
"Eat when you need"
"Many a little makes the nickel"
2. Direct Indirect Speeches میں reported speech کو quotation marks کے درمیان لکھا جاتا ہے:-
".He said, "I will go to London next week
".My father said, "Always respect your elders
کسی کی کہی ہوئی بات کو اگر حرف بہ حرف دہرانا ہو تو quotation marks کے درمیان لکھی جاتی ہے۔

3. الفاظ کی اہمیت اجاگر کرنے یا کسی بات پر زور دینے کے لیے quotation marks استعمال ہوتے ہیں:-
Shazia said that the case was "far from over" and that "we will win."
4. Quotation کے درمیان اگر مزید quotation لگانی ہو تو single quotation لگائی جا تی ہے:-
Hafeez said: "In a town outside Swat, I saw ‘Tourists go home‘ written on a wall. But then someone told me, ‘Pay it no attention.‘ "
Ahmed told the teacher, "I saw Waheed at the playground, and he said to me ‘Basit started the fight,‘ and I believed him."
Ellipsis (...) کا استعمال
Ellipsis (…) تین ڈاٹ کا استعمال sentence کے نامکمل ہونے کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔ اگر کوئی جملہ یا text بہت لمبا ہو اور لکھنے کی جگہ کی تنگی ہو یا کسی text کو دہرانا یا لکھنا ضروری نہ ہو یا کسی وجہ سے ہم مکمل text نہ لکھنا چاہتے ہوں تو تین ڈاٹ لگا کر جملہ ختم کر دیا جاتا ہے۔ پڑہنے والا سمجھ جاتا ہے کہ کچھ text اور بھی ہے جو یہاں نہیں لکھا گیا ہے۔ جس جملے میں ellipsis استعمال ہوتے ہیں، اسے quotation marks کے درمیان لکھا جاتا ہے:-
He began to count, "One, two, three, four…” until he got to 10.
When Newton stated, "An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion…” he developed the law of motion.
Capitalization کیا ہے؟
انگریزی میں لکھنے کے لیے دو قسم کے حروف (letters یا alphabets) استعمال ہوتے ہیں:-
- small letters
- CAPITAL LETTERS
اوپر لکھی گئی قسموں میں استعمال ہونے والےحروف سے آپ نےدیکھ لیا ہو گا کہ small letters کا سائز چھوٹا اور capital letters کا سائز بڑا ہے اسکے علاوہ لکھائی میں بھی کچھ فرق ہے۔ انگریزی میں زیادہ تر لکھائی small letters میں ہوتی ہے۔ Capital letters کا استعمال کچھ جگہوں پر ہوتا ہے جس کی تفصیل آگے بیان کی جاتی ہے۔

Capitalization کا استعمال
Capitalization سے مراد لفظ کا پہلا حرف capitalize کر نا ہوتا ہے۔ مندرجہ ذیل جگہوں پر capitalization کی جا تی ہے:-
1. ہر sentence کا پہلا لفظ capitalize کیا جا تا ہے:-
The dog is running.
Who had caught the cat?
Hey! It’s great to see him! How has he been?
2. تمام اشخاص، جگہوں،عمارتوں، ملکوں، پہاڑوں، دریاؤں، سمندروں، شہروں ، اداروں، پارٹیوں کے نام capitalize ہوتے ہیں، چاہے یہ نام جملے کے شروع میں آئیں، درمیان میں آئیں یا آخر میں آئیں، اکیلے استعمال ہوں یا heading میں استعمال ہوں۔

Karachi is situated in the south of Pakistan. Pakistan has world’s second highest mountain K2. Its longest river is the Indus River. It has four provinces – Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhrunkhwa and Baluchistan. Lahore, Faisalabad, Hyderabad Peshawar are other big cities. Shahrah-e-Faisal and I.I. Chundrigar Road are famous roads of Karachi. On the south of Karachi is the Arabian Sea.
3. تمام مذاہب ، فرقوں، زبانوں، نسلوں، شہریتوں، کے نام capitalize ہوتے ہیں:-
Christians, Muslims and Hindus are the biggest religions of the world.
English, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, and Urdu are spoken by Americans, Britains, Chinese, Indians, Arabs, and Pakistanis.
4. Quotation کے پہلے لفظ کو capitalize کریں:-
Baqar asked, “What is everyone doing this weekend?”
Zainy answered, “My sister and I are going to the water park.”
5. دنوں، مہینوں، اور چھٹیوں کے دنوں کے نام capitalize ہوتے ہیں:-
Most of the countries’ working week starts from Monday.
It is very hot from May to June in the sub-continent.
She forgot about Valentine’s Day.
6. Books, movies اور دیگر titles کو عام طور پر capitalize کیا جاتا ہے:-
Children like movies of the Harry Potter series.
Did you like the book "Prisoner of Zenda”?
7. Headings کے تمام الفاظ علاوہ prepositions کو عام طور پر capitalize کیا جا تا ہے:-
