ہمارے پاس موجود انگلش الفاظ کے ذخیرے یعنی vocabulary کی اہمیت سے کوئی بھی انکار نہیں کر سکتا۔ ہمارے بولنے اور لکھنے کا انحصار ان الفاظ کے ذخیرے پر ہوتا ہے جو ہمارے علم میں ہوتے ہیں۔ جتنے زیادہ الفاظ ہم جانتے ہوں گے اتنا ہی زیادہ ہم انگلش میں گفتگو کر سکتے ہیں۔ اس پر عبور حاصل کرنے کے لیے زیادہ سے زیادہ الفاظ کا جاننا نہایت ضروری ہے۔
آکسفورڈ ڈکشنری میں تقریبا 273,000 الفاظ ہیں جن میں سے171476 موجودہ استعمال میں ہیں۔ کہا جاتا ہے کہ کسی بھی مادری زبان کے بولنے والے کےلیے پندرہ سے بیس ہزار الفاظ کا ذخیرہ بہت اچھا شمار کیا جاتا ہے۔جبکہ دوسری زبان کے طور پہ آٹھ سے دس ہزار الفاظ کا ذخیرہ اچھا شمار کیا جاتا ہے۔ جن میں سے تین ہزار الفاظ بار بار استعمال کیے جاتے ہیں۔ کہا جاسکتا ہے کہ تین ہزار الفاظ کے معنی جاننے سے اچھی انگریزی بولی اور لکھی جا سکتی ہے۔
